Trauma-Informed Care

60 Minutes

Logo for Trauma-Informed Care Training Course. It is a circle with a gradient of blue on the outside that fades into a light purple in the middle. In front is a white icon of a heart with arms wrapping around the front of it like a hug.

Trauma-Informed care is a principle of best practice that assumes that our clients, customers, or patients are more likely than not to have a history of trauma. Therefore, service providers should be thoughtful about how we interact with those we serve and how a history of trauma may play a role in those services.

This training may be adjusted based on audience knowledge level. For example, for those with little to no prior training or education in Trauma-Informed Care, discussion would focus on foundational knowledge, principles, and practices. More advanced trainings would focus on integrating trauma-informed care into agency and organization practices and policies.

Perfect For:

There are three main tracks for this training:

  • Victim Advocacy Organizations
  • Healthcare Service Providers
  • Law Enforcement

Compassion Fatigue has many names: Vicarious Trauma, Secondary Traumatic Stress, Burnout… But the overall definition is the fatigue that occurs when those in helping professions take on the suffering of those who have experienced extreme stress or trauma (Charles R. Figley, PhD, founder of the Traumatology Institute at Tulane University).

Compassion Fatigue can happen to anyone and should be a concern of both professionals in the field as well as organizations. Finding good coping strategies and having self-care plans and practices in place can help individuals and organizations function professionally, ethically, and in a way that best serves victims.

Training Consultation

Some training curricula are eligible for an additional hour of organization/setting-specific training and consultation in the topic area. For example, a clinic receiving training in trauma-informed care may use an additional hour of training consultation to audit current organizational policies and practices, develop new ones, and/or create implementation plans. As another example, a hospital may request trauma-informed care training for all staff with additional consultation by unit to tailor trauma-informed practices to an emergency setting versus a pediatric setting.

Ongoing Consultation

Organizations may also request ongoing consultation and mentorship in program or product development, evaluation, trauma-informed care, and service implementation. Ongoing consultation allows organizations to be intentional about their work and ensure they routinely evaluate for quality, impact, and equity.
